BOEHLY KEPT IN THE DARK BY VAR, JUST LIKE ALL THE FANS

-

TODD BOEHLY watched his first game as Chelsea’s

prospective new owner on Saturday. His team went 2-0 up against Wolves, but drew 2-2 with the equaliser scored in the seventh minute of stoppage time. It was said he wouldn’t like that. No, he probably wouldn’t. But he would have understood it. He has a baseball franchise, and a basketball franchise, he will have seen plenty of games that turned on the last play. What he won’t have understood, what no American owner will understand, was why he sat uninformed for three or four minutes in the second half, while VAR decided whether Chelsea had a penalty or not. There were no replays, no explanation of what was being considered, no hint of the conversation between referee Peter Bankes and the VAR Jarred Gillett. Boehly would have been perplexed like the rest of us, an insult that would never happen Stateside. With the price of tickets so high, it is outrageous that the least informed people are those in the stadium paying the premium rates. It doesn’t happen in America and maybe Boehly and his compatriots could use their considerable clout to influence English football for the better on this. It would make a pleasant change.
