Today’s poem LITTLE BOXES

-

There is a wealth of little boxes that surrounds us every day, Most are visible, but some stay out of sight. Some have sentimental keepsakes we prefer to lock away. Some store cocoa pods for tasty drinks at night. Some hold pebbles from a far-flung beach, still shiny, bright and new Small, carefree souvenirs from holidays with friends. Some hold silky scarves and strips of cloth in multi-coloured hues That still remind us of old favourite fashion trends. We have this love of little boxes (though we may not think we do), All filled with objects from our very different lives. From the jewellery we cherish to that brand new pair of shoes, To the pills that keep a lot of us alive. We post our mail in letter boxes, we commute in box-shaped trains, Then travel back to all our cosy, box-shaped homes Where all our day-today essentials are compatibly contained In TVs, fridges, cupboards, beds — and box-shaped phones. Our smarter friends are called brainboxes when they think outside the box We’re boxing clever when we’re going with the flow. And we can fill them, squash them, stack them, store them — in a bigger box; It’s elementary mathematics, don’t you know. And so, it matters not a jot, how uber cool we think we are; Old Father Time waits in the wings and gently mocks; For when we shuffle off this mortal coil and leave our little star, He knows the chances are we’ll leave it — in a box!
