it WAs a case of no ties, no lunch, for the rolling stones pop group at Bristol’s grand Hotel yesterday. they were barred from its restaurant because they were wearing t-shirts and coloured sweaters. they tried another restaurant, but ended up with a snack in a cafe frequented by the city’s university students. Head waiter Dick Court told Mick Jagger: ‘i’m afraid you cannot come in to eat unless you wear a jacket and a tie.’

KiM PHiLBY, the third man in Britain’s most notorious spy scandal, has died in Moscow. He was 76. the most detested traitor in the past 40 years, Philby defected to the soviet Union in 1963. He had spent many years passing secrets gathered in his work for British intelligen­ce to the russians.

rAMi MALeK, 41. the American, born to egyptian parents, became the first person of Arab heritage to win a best actor Oscar, for playing Freddie Mercury in 2018’s Bohemian rhapsody. For the role he wore false teeth — Mercury was born with four extra incisors. eMiLiO esteVeZ, 59. the American actor — son of Martin sheen, brother of Charlie — rose to fame after starring in 1985’s the Breakfast Club and st elmo’s Fire, becoming part of the Hollywood ‘Brat Pack’ of young A-listers. He was famously engaged to Demi Moore and briefly married to U.s. choreograp­her Paula Abdul.

BORN ON THIS DAY

LesLie CHArteris (1907-1993). the British-Chinese author made his name creating the character simon templar, aka the saint. He dropped out of Cambridge university, travelled the world, working in gold prospectin­g, pearl fishing, rubber planting and tin mining. He listed his recreation­s in Who’s Who as eating, drinking, going to horse races and loafing. FLOrenCe nigHtingAL­e (1820-1910). the Florence-born nurse and social reformer nursed wounded soldiers in the Crimean War, earning the nickname ‘the Lady with the Lamp’. the founder of modern nursing also set up her own nursing school at st thomas’ Hospital in London.
