THE JUBILEE PUDDING: 70 YEARS IN THE BAKING, 8PM, BBC1

-

IN JANUARY, the Queen’s favourite grocer, Fortnum & Mason, launched a competition for home bakers to create an original dessert for Her Majesty’s Jubilee. Tonight, the Platinum Pudding will be revealed as the finalists’ creations are judged by a panel of experts headed by Mary Berry, before the winner is announced by the Duchess of Cornwall. The criteria included that the pudding should be easy to make at home, so if you fancy tucking into a slice yourself, the recipe will be available on the BBC and Fortnum & Mason websites.

The final five (pictured) are a crown-shaped Victoria sponge cake created by Sam Smith, who has made the jam with Dubonnet, rumoured to be one of The Queen’s favourites; a four nations pudding containing Scottish berries, English rhubarb, Welsh cakes and Irish cream, which was dreamt up by sales manager Susan Gardner; a passion fruit and thyme frangipane tart created by musician Kathryn MacLennan; a rose falooda cake, which Shabnam Russo has based on a favourite sweet of her Indian grandparents; and Jemma Melvin’s lemon Swiss roll and amaretti trifle. So, which pudding will be crowned the winner and take its place on street party tables up and down the country on the first weekend of June?
