113 products in salmonella scare

SUPERMARKETS and coffee shops have pulled at least 113 products containing chicken amid a salmonella scare.

Food producer Cranswick said a ‘limited number of cooked chicken products’ were found to be contaminated during a ‘routine inspection’ at its Hull factory.

Tens of thousands of sandwiches, wraps, party food items, salads and ready meals are being removed from shelves.

Cranswick launched an investigation and advised retailers to recall products containing ready-to-eat chicken as a ‘precautionary measure’. Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Marks & Spencer, Aldi and the Co-op were all affected.

Costa, Starbucks and Caffe Nero removed items, while Pret a Manger withdrew many chicken products as a precaution.

Salmonella poisoning can cause vomiting and diarrhoea. As of last night, there were no reports of anyone falling ill.
