Darts ace jailed for sex attack
FORMER world darts champion Ted Hankey has been jailed for two years after he was caught on camera sexually assaulting a young woman.
The 54-year-old, who had shown ‘more self-pity than remorse’, wiped away tears as he was sentenced. He had admitted sexual assault at a previous hearing.
Judge Steven Everett told Chester Crown Court that Hankey had shown an ‘arrogant entitlement’ when he ‘pinned down’ his victim in the ‘opportunist’ attack in September last year.
When arrested, Hankey ‘flatly denied’ any wrongdoing, and when told the attack in Crewe had been caught on camera he refused to answer detectives’ questions.
‘You genuinely believed nobody would believe her, until you were shown the damning evidence,’ the judge said.
In a victim statement read to the court, the woman said she still suffers distress, panic attacks and heart palpitations.
