Dominoes win for ‘noisy’ OAPs

-

A PENSIONER threatened with jail over games of street dominoes has won a case against a ‘discriminatory’ court order.

Ernest Theophile, 74, has played the traditional game with West Indian friends in a north London square for over 12 years.

A judge last year rejected a council’s bid to ban the gatherings after it received 200 noise complaints. But a court order was issued saying participants could be jailed if caught ‘shouting and swearing’.

Yesterday Central London County Court said Westminster Council had failed to consider the men’s racial equality rights.

Mr Theophile, who came from Dominica in the 1950s, said: ‘It’s part of my culture to spend time playing dominoes with other West Indian men my age. It keeps us healthy.’ The council said it ‘is reviewing its approach to this case to find a solution that works for the whole community’.
