Pulisic: Season’s a success if we win

- By MATT BARLOW

Christian PulisiC believes Fa Cup revenge on liverpool will transform Chelsea’s frustrating season of ups and downs into a success.

thomas tuchel’s team have won the FiFa Club World Cup and the uEFa super Cup and are third in the Premier league but have missed their biggest targets and lost on penalties in the Carabao Cup final against liverpool, their opponents in the Fa Cup final at Wembley today.

‘Overall we accomplished a lot,’ said Pulisic. ‘We were very close in some competitions. We put up a big fight in the Champions league and were very close to making it to the semi-finals.

‘We were in the Carabao Cup final, there were a lot of impressive performances and now we have a chance in the Fa Cup final.

‘there have been ups and downs. We just have to look forward, try to win this and then i think we can say it’s been a pretty successful season.

‘liverpool have a ton of talent, incredible players and a good manager. it’s never going to be easy but it’s one game and anything can happen. if we play how we’re capable of playing, we can do it.’

Chelsea are in their fifth Fa Cup final in six years, looking to win it for the first time since 2018, and the showpiece has yet to deliver complete satisfaction for Pulisic, who scored the opener two years ago only to be injured as arsenal fought back to win.

last season, he came on as a substitute as Chelsea were beaten by leicester and this campaign has not gone to plan for the american, with the 23-year-old starting only a dozen Premier league games and being moved into various positions, including wing-back, by boss tuchel.

‘i feel most comfortable in a more attacking role,’ says Pulisic. ‘Mainly coming from the left side, as a left winger or inverted winger on the left side. there has been a lot of change this season and i’ve been all over the place a bit. that’s what happens, i guess, when you have a very deep squad.

‘Of course, i want to be on the pitch and recently with the limited time i’ve had i’ve been trying to make as big an impact as i can to prove i should be out there.

‘sometimes that’s how it goes. i enjoy this club a lot and i’m going to give it everything and hope i can get more opportunities to get out on the pitch and help the team.’
