GP who abused 47 women locked up for 12 years

- By Eirian Jane Prosser

a GP who abused 47 female patients while ‘hiding in plain sight’ for decades was jailed for 12 years yesterday.

Married Krishna singh, 72, kissed, groped, inappropriately examined and made sleazy comments during 34 years of abusive behaviour towards vulnerable women, including a rape victim.

singh, described by one victim as acting ‘like Benny Hill’, had been so highly thought of that he was given a job by the police, working as a casualty surgeon in the 1980s, a role that included examining victims of sexual violence. He was also awarded an MBE for services to medicine.

But yesterday he was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow for 54 charges of sexual and indecent assault dating from between February 1983 and May 2018.

the offences, which he had denied, mainly occurred at practices in Lanarkshire, but also at a hospital a&E department, a police station and on visits to patients’ homes.

Police, however, say the complaints made so far are ‘the tip of the iceberg’.

Prosecutor angela Gray said: ‘Dr singh was in a routine of offending against women. a quick feel, a look in an intimate area, an indecent comment. this was his way of working, hiding in plain sight.’

Judge Lord armstrong, who sentenced singh, from airdrie, Lanarkshire, said the GP had ‘undermined the standing of the medical profession and eroded the trust of female patients’.

He put singh on the sex offenders register indefinitely, pointing out that he had not expressed regret for what he had done.

During his two-month trial, a series of women recounted how they had been assaulted.

a 50-year-old woman – examined by singh at Motherwell Police station in 2008 after reporting being raped – told jurors: ‘He was asking if I was being provocative.

‘He said, “so, you are not a good time girl?”’ the GP then went on to molest her.

another former patient, now 39, told how singh would ‘press and prod’ around her pant line – even if the appointment was for a sore throat.

one woman said: ‘He was like Benny Hill, he came with both hands, groped my breasts. He laughed.’
