Why the Church is wrong on racism

-

I HAVE long despaired of the Church of England’s stance and attitudes. The Archbishop of Canterbury seems out of touch with society. Many like me who for years found comfort in the Church now feel we don’t belong. The Church has completely lost the plot when white senior members lecture Calvin Robinson, a trainee vicar who is mixed race, about the issue of institutional racism. We all strive to have empathy with our fellow citizens from other backgrounds and ethnicities, but I would not be so presumptuous and arrogant to say I know how they feel. Mr Robinson should be respected for his views. I may not agree with some of his ideas about our faith and the Church, but I applaud him for defending the majority of people in this country. The Church of England needs to stop meddling in politics and communicate with their dwindling flock, not a vocal minority pressing the woke agenda.

SUSAN FELLA, London N21. LIKE many people, Calvin Robinson doesn’t believe Britain is institutionally racist. It would seem the Church thinks otherwise. It’s a good job he’s not vindictive because he would have a good discrimination claim.

PAUL MORLEY, Skipton, N. Yorks. CALVIN ROBINSON is in a far better position than a white bishop to judge whether there is racism in the Church of England. His experience of acceptance should be believed. However, he does not believe in the ordination of women. This misogynistic view decries the wonderful work that ordained women carry out in the Church. It is surely for that reason he should be denied ordination.

J. GREEN, Burton upon Trent, Staffs. YET again the Church of England is embroiled in political controversy. Calvin Robinson’s insistence that Britain is not racist is not acceptable to the white, middle-class hierarchy. How patronising and condescending! The Anglican Communion is adept at scoring own goals. The rules of political correctness are easily thrown back at these deluded bishops. It is the liberals who need to be ‘cancelled’.

DAVID FLEMING, Downham Market, Norfolk.
