Spaniards join Chelsea in pursuit of Sterling

Raheem could quit City to get more game time

- By JACK GAUGHAN

Real Madrid, Barcelona and atletico Madrid have stepped up their interest in raheem Sterling as the Manchester City forward looks to make a decision on his future this month.

Sterling, who has won nine major trophies with City following his £49million transfer from liverpool in 2015, is heading into the final 12 months of his contract and being trailed by several clubs, domestically and abroad.

The Spanish trio, along with Chelsea, have been mentioned as potential destinations for the 27-year-old were he to leave City this summer.

it is believed that Bayern Munich have also checked on his situation as they look to replenish in attacking areas, and real were caught cold when top target Kylian Mbappe chose to remain at Paris Saint-Germain.

Sterling decided some time ago that he would not contemplate his future in the North-West until after england’s four Nations league fixtures this month — the last of which sees them host Hungary on June 14.

The forward, england’s star man during last year’s thrilling run to the european Championship final, linked up with Gareth Southgate’s squad yesterday ahead of Saturday’s opener against Hungary in Budapest. Strong performances over the coming two weeks are expected to strengthen interest and Sterling believes that regular games will prove crucial if he is to make an impact at this winter’s World Cup in Qatar. He is acutely aware of the need to make a swift call on where he will be playing next season once the international window has concluded — with minutes in the biggest games a key factor. Sterling did not start either leg of the Champions league semi-final against real, with riyad Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus preferred by City manager Pep Guardiola both home and away. Sterling, who recently broke into the club’s list of top 10 all-time goalscorers and the Premier league’s 100 club, is likely to represent an attractive proposition with only a year left on his deal if he did request to leave City. He wants to join one of european football’s elite clubs as he still has ambitions of lifting the Champions league.
