Best summer dresses — from just £11

Treat yourself to a mood-boosting holiday outfit without breaking the bank

There’s always room in your life (and your closet) for one more summer dress, and this season it must be citrus-coloured.

And I’m not just talking lemon yellow — everything from lime green through to ruby-red grapefruit is on the table.

There’s a sweet spot, of course. You want a bright, eyecatching design but one that’s still practical and will see you through many seasons to come. These tones are on trend now but they are surprisingly timeless, too.

Bold, brave and vibrant colours took over the catwalks for spring/summer 2022. Christian Dior sent a stunning lemon-yellow shift dress with matching jacket down the catwalk.

At Versace it was a block-colour tangerine mini dress, teamed with citrus accessories. And designer Prabal Gurung sent models sashaying down the runway in silky lime-green slip dresses.

It wasn’t just a squeeze of citrus here and there, though — this look is about head-to-toe flamboyance, so brace yourself.

The good news is, once you’ve nailed your colour choice, there are dresses in every shape and style, so you can easily find one that flatters.

someone with a fuller bust could head towards a V-neck, while hourglass figures may prefer a wrap style. That said, I don’t believe in strict rules when it comes to shape. You don’t have to conceal your upper arms or avoid minis past a certain age. Wear what makes you feel good.

But in summer, you do want a frock that you can throw on in a hurry and not worry about. A versatile design that can be dressed up or down is your best bet, whether nipping to the shops or out for dinner with friends.

I love Tesco’s F&F embroidered design for just £25. I’ll be packing it for my next beach holiday and continuing to wear it when I return to the office.

Of course, if you want to take the citrus trend literally then head to Boden, which has decorated its bestselling styles with lemons.

With the cost-of-living crisis tightening purse strings, everything you see on this page is under £100. Follow along the rows, from £11 at the top left, to find something tailored to your budget.

As for accessories, for a perfectly finished look, go maximalist with jewellery and shoes in another bright colour, or play it safe and team your dress with something simple and understated. Brown leather heels and natural straw bags will work brilliantly.
