4 die as packed train derails

FOUR people died and dozens were injured after a train crowded with students derailed yesterday.

Three double-decker carriages overturned near the Alpine resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria, with passengers pulled to safety from windows.

Police said that about 30 people were hurt, 15 seriously. The tragedy came as a discount rail ticket was launched at the start of the Whitsun break. A police spokesman said the service was ‘very crowded’.

Bavaria’s governor said he was shocked and saddened. ‘The students in particular were looking forward to the holidays.’

The incident’s cause was last night being investigated and the line remained closed.
