MAINCROP potatoes should be growing nicely by now. You can increase yield if you earth up your plants over the coming few weeks. Tubers are produced, not from the potato roots but from buried sections of the stems. So if you bury the lower parts of your potatoes’ stems, they will develop a larger number of tubers. if you then keep the crop healthy and well-watered, your yields should significantly improve. Keep watch for blight. Never leave potato tops lying on the ground after harvesting. The blight spores are carried in raindrops and in moist atmosphere.
