FIRST-TEST RATINGS

- By LAWRENCE BOOTH

ENGLAND

ALEX LEES 5.5

Twice got into the 20s but couldn’t go beyond. Raised eyebrows by standing outside off stump in the first innings but he was then more fluent in the second.

ZAK CRAWLEY 6

Looked the part while making 43 on the first day but still can’t resist it outside off stump. Averages 28 from 40 Test innings.

OLLIE POPE 3

Had never batted at No 3 and it showed. Made seven and 10, and didn’t look comfortable. Reacted well to run out Colin de Grandhomme in the second innings.

JOE ROOT 9

Made up for a tame first-innings dismissal with one of the greatest of his 26 Test hundreds. Hell of a way to begin life back in the ranks.

JONNY BAIRSTOW 5

He was bowled twice — a longstanding weakness. But was electric in the field — most notably the worldclass catch to dismiss Will Young.

BEN STOKES 7

Changed the mood of England’s chase with a harum-scarum half-century. Underbowled himself a touch, but otherwise led astutely in the field.

BEN FOAKES 8

Kept neatly, especially low to his right, and was a nerveless presence alongside Root in the fourth innings. Just what his Test career needed.

MATT POTTS 9

Seven for 68 on debut and a bowling average of nine. Looked a natural.

STUART BROAD

7 Revived England’s hopes on the third morning by removing Daryl Mitchell and Kyle Jamieson in the same over, either side of De Grandhomme’s run-out. Got the crowd going, too.

JAMES ANDERSON 8

Unplayable on the first morning, if a touch short after lunch. Six more wickets underlined the madness of his omission in the Caribbean.

MATT PARKINSON 6

An emergency call-up, he was steady in conditions unhelpful for legbreaks, and got a first Test wicket.
