Modern artist Rego dies at 87
DAME Paula Rego, the renowned Portuguese-British artist known for her unsettling work on subjects such as abortion, has died aged 87.
In an announcement yesterday, the Victoria Miro gallery in London said Rego ‘died peacefully this morning after a short illness, at home in north London, surrounded by her family’.
Dame Paula, pictured, who had a retrospective exhibition at the Tate Britain last year, created pictures based on childhood memories and fairytales, but often with an undercurrent of violence and oppression.
