ASSIGNMENT: EVACUATED TO RUSSIA, 9.06AM, 8.06PM, BBC WORLD SERVICE
AGAINST their will and in fear for their lives, thousands of Ukrainian civilians have been rounded up and transported out of the war zone and into Russian territory. From there, they are dispersed into a chain of temporary camps, often thousands of miles from their homeland. Vladimir Putin and his henchmen claim they will give these exiles new homes, new lives and jobs, but few Ukrainians believe that. Tim Whewell describes how these so-called ‘evacuees’ try to escape, helped by some extraordinarily brave Russian activists.
