£184m Lottery winners splash out ... on a £38k 2nd-hand Volvo!

FERRARI, Lamborghini, Aston Martin... when you’ve just won £184million on the lottery, you can have any car you want.

But Joe and Jess Thwaite have proven their taste is far more modest.

When the couple became Britain’s biggest lottery winners last month, they said they planned to replace their Hyundai hatchback with something more practical.

True to their word, they are now the proud owners of a second-hand £38,000 Volvo estate. Mr Thwaite, 49, was spotted with his wife, 44, in the V60 B5 car as they arrived at their Grade II-listed village home near Gloucester this week to meet builders.

The pair, who have two children, hired the crew to do up the ‘dream’ £650,000 project house they moved to a few months before they scooped the EuroMillions jackpot. Their neighbours said they were not shocked that they have been so restrained.

One told The Sun: ‘They’re mega lottery winners but first and foremost they’re down-to-earth people who have worked hard their whole lives.

‘The car is smart, respectable and sensible – just like Joe and Jess... the fact that they’ve not splurged it all on sports cars or booze shows what great people they are.’

Mr Thwaite, who has quit his job as a sales engineer for a communications firm, said after his win: ‘My dream car was a [Skoda] Superb estate because of the amount of stuff you can get in the boot.’

Mrs Thwaite has stepped back from the hairdressing salon she runs with her sister to make decisions about the future.

The couple are now said to have their eye on a £7.25million mansion in the Cotswolds near Jeremy Clarkson’s farm.
