OFF TO A FLYING START

-

THE 84 put on by Tom Latham and Will Young was the highest opening partnership in the first innings of a Trent Bridge Test since Marcus Trescothick (right) and Andrew Strauss began with 105 against Australia in 2005. The overall record for the highest first-innings opening stand at Nottingham is the mammoth 329 Geoff Marsh and Mark Taylor put on for Australia in 1989. The Aussies won that match, unsurprisingly.

• JAMES ANDERSON extended his lead at the top of Trent Bridge’s Test wicket-taking list, and now has 70 at 19 apiece. This was Anderson’s 12th Test at Trent Bridge — more than anyone else. Of the five other traditional English Test grounds, he has also played the most at Lord’s (tied with Alastair Cook), the Oval and Edgbaston. If he plays in the third Test he will match Graham Gooch’s Headingley record of 12. He is two off Godfrey Evans’ record of 11 at Old Trafford.

• IF New Zealand are to win this series, they will need to emulate their achievement in England in 1999 — when they turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 victory. It remains the only time that they have come from behind to win a Test series. Stephen Fleming was the Kiwi captain for that impressive feat. Furthermore, that tour remains the last time that New Zealand played in a Test series of more than three games.
