Woman, 71, dies after being hit by teenager riding e-scooter
A 71-YEAR-OLD woman has died in hospital six days after she was hit by a teenage e-scooter rider on a pavement.
Linda Davis, known to family and friends as Lou, passed away last Wednesday after being involved in a collision with a privately owned electric scooter.
Police said the 14-year- old rider, who is under investigation, stayed at the scene in Rainworth, Nottinghamshire, and called the emergency services. It comes as government data released last month revealed a sharp increase in e- scooter injuries and deaths from 2020 to 2021.
Last year nine riders were killed in collisions involving e-scooters, compared to one the previous year. The number of collisions involving e- scooters nearly tripled, with 1,280 last year compared to 460 in 2020.
However the data on e-scooter deaths can vary. The Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety said it was aware of 12 deaths involving e-scooters last year.
The charity wrote online that it knows of 18 deaths involving e-scooters since 2019, with three this year up to mid-May.
Private sales of e-scooters have boomed despite it being illegal to ride them in most cases and there are now thought to be up to a million on British streets. Under a new Transport Bill, riders will soon be allowed to legally use them on public roads.
