DIY SOS: THE BIG BUILD, 8PM, BBC1
IN CHARLTON KINGS, Cheltenham, dad Peter, a former car mechanic, is struggling to look after his wife and their adult daughter — Sarah and Suzanne both have myotonic dystrophy, a genetic disorder that affects their muscle function. The family (pictured) have to find the space for wheelchairs and other specialist equipment, plus the care assistants who attend every day — and on top of that, Peter has given a home to his older brother, Steve, who has growing care needs of his own. The layout of the house — in particular, the narrow doorways — just doesn’t work for them, and Peter has been looking for a solution. He started to build an extension; then, his own health took a turn for the worse and he has been unable to finish the job. Now, the family face an uncertain future and may be forced to leave and move into a home. Step forward Nick Knowles, his team and, as ever, hundreds of volunteers from far and wide, who arrive to give this deserving family the home they so desperately need. And even with a storm raging outside, nothing can dampen the workers’ spirits as they take on an emotional build.
