Kate remembers Grenfell victims 5 years on
THE Duke and Duchess of f Cambridge yesterday joined d survivors and bereaved d families of the Grenfell Tower r fire for a poignant service to o mark the fifth anniversary of f the tragedy.
William and Kate attended the service held in the shadow of the tower block in Kensington, west London, organised by campaign group Grenfell United.
The duke and duchess sat in the front row for the service, during which a 72-second silence was observed in memory of the 72 who died. Kate laid a white flowered wreath at the base of the tower, and earlier they held a private meeting with those affected by the blaze, Kensington Palace said. The royal couple have long supported survivors and the families who died in the fire on June 14, 2017. William and the Queen received applause when they met survivors, residents, emergency g responders and volunteers in the days after the tragedy.
The future king and his wife also a met survivors in November b 2019 during a visit for the launch la of the National Emergencies g Trust, of which William li is patron.
Yesterday’s service was one of o several events to mark the fif fifth anniversary of the deadliest lie domestic fire since World W War Two. Earlier, survivors, th the bereaved and politicians attended at a memorial at Westminster m Abbey, where a bell tolled to 72 times in tribute to the th victims. Multi-faith leaders read the victim’s names aloud before a minute’s silence. The congregation also included former prime minister Theresa May and London Mayor Sadiq Khan.
