A hungry squirrel? Let it eat some cake
WHEN my now husband and I started dating, he invited me to Coventry for a weekend break.
We toured the city before we had lunch in the park.
I was sitting on a wall munching an Eccles cake when a squirrel ran along the wall right up to me and put his paws on my leg.
I was a little surprised.
‘Do you want some food?’ I asked him.
I tore off some cake and held it out. He took it from my hand and nibbled away. Once finished, he again put his paws on my leg. So I gave him more. This happened until he had eaten what was left of the Eccles cake.
‘I have no more for you,’ I told him. He cocked his head on one side, then hopped off the wall and scooted up a tree into the foliage. It was a magical moment I will never forget. I have a colony of squirrels living close to my garden. My husband is a baker and — yes — they get Eccles cakes!
