TOP SPIN AT THE TEST

- LAWRENCE BOOTH AT TRENT BRIDGE

BAIRSTOW’S TON NOT QUITE QUICK ENOUGH!

JONNY BAIRSTOW’S hundred from 77 balls was the second-fastest for England in history. The only faster ton was by Gilbert Jessop, who took one ball fewer (76) to reach three figures against Australia at the Oval in 1902.

THIS was the highest-scoring of the 65 Tests held at Trent Bridge, with 1,675 runs. The previous record was 1,496 back in 1938, when Australia replied to England’s 658 for eight with 411 and, following on, 427 for six — though that match was played over four days.

BOUNDARIES GALORE AS TEST RECORD TUMBLES

THE game also saw the most boundaries in a single Test — 249, made up of 225 fours and 24 sixes. According to Sky Sports statistician Benedict Bermange, it beat the 242 (238 fours and four sixes) between Australia and India at Sydney in 2003-04.

ONLY three teams have lost a Test

after scoring more than New Zealand’s 553 in the first innings of the game: Bangladesh lost after making 595 for eight against New Zealand at Wellington in 2016-17, Australia after making 586 against England at Sydney in 1894-95, and Australia again after making 556 against India at Adelaide in 2003-04.

THIS was the highest successful run-chase in the fourth innings at Trent Bridge, beating England’s own 284 for six against New Zealand in 2004.

OLLIE POPE (right) equalled the Test record for the most innings from the start of a career without a duck — this was his 44th, level with Australia’s Jim Burke.

CRAWLEY FLOPS AGAIN

ZAK CRAWLEY’S second-innings duck means he has now been dismissed in single figures in 21 of his 42 Test innings. On another seven occasions, he has failed to reach 20.

TRENT BOULT’S 17 runs helped him pull clear of Muttiah Muralitharan to become the highest-scoring No 11 in Test history. He now has 640 runs from that position at an average of 16.

JAMES ANDERSON has now taken as many Test wickets since turning 30 (383) as Ian Botham managed during his entire Test career.
