SHE may be all smiles on the red carpet but clearly you don’t want to get on the wrong side of Dame Emma Thompson.

For the actress, 63, is flaunting her fiercer side with her latest terrifying role.

The double Oscar winner transformed into the scowling Miss Trunchbull complete with military jacket and a slicked back bun.

In the first trailer for Matilda the Musical, Dame Emma was difficult to recognise. Complete with facial prosthetics, she looked frightening as the headmistress who terrorises young children.

In one clip – adapted from Roald Dahl’s 1988 novel – she is shown picking a girl up by her plaits, swinging her round her head and hurling her across the playground.

The film also stars Line of Duty’s Stephen Graham and actress Andrea Riseborough as the parents of Matilda Wormwood. The title character – a five-year-old bookworm with extraordinary powers – will be played by child actress Alisha Weir.

Matilda was previously adapted for the big screen in 1996 and starred Pam Ferris as Miss Trunchbull.

The latest film is based on Tim Minchin’s 2010 musical and will be released in cinemas on December 2.
