WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE, 9PM, BBC1

-

THE comedy actor and Great British Bake Off presenter Matt Lucas (pictured) looks pensive — a million miles from his outrageous screen personas — as he remembers with touching fondness his German grandma, Margot (pronounced Mar-got, with a hard T). His Jewish family have roots in Berlin, and that’s where Matt starts his journey to find out more about his beloved grandma — though he’s quite sure that the profoundly unsentimental Margot would think all the fuss ‘nonsense’. She kept a lot of things to herself, not least her painful memories of the Second World War, and Matt is on the trail of all the secrets left unsaid by Margot, who died in 1999. His investigations lead him next to Amsterdam, to where Margot’s cousins fled from Nazi persecution, and it’s in the Dutch capital that Matt discovers a connection to one of the most famous figures from those dark times, the diarist Anne Frank. Inevitably, Matt’s journey is a deeply moving one, and his perspective on the whole thing is a great balance of heart and head — with the odd well-judged joke thrown in, too.
