Servant of democracy
I WORKED for the civil service for 20 years, most of that time implementing policies for a government I did not agree with. But it never occurred to me that I should challenge that because the public did not vote for me.
I also signed and respected the Official Secrets Act.
A non-political civil service has always been a cornerstone of our democracy
If the Public and Commercial Services Union, which represents more than 80 per cent of Border Force staff, disagrees so fundamentally with what they are required to do as part of their job, then its members should resign and campaign independently.
If they are not prepared to fulfil their work contracts, they should be sacked.
Unfortunately, many managers are too spineless and incompetent to do anything about it.
