Coe: London Stadium sale plan is bizarre

- RIATH AL-SAMARRAI

SEBASTIAN COE claims it would be ‘bizarre’ for UK Athletics to cash in on the London Stadium. Under a 50-year deal, UKA can use the home of the London 2012 Olympics for a month each summer. But owing to their wafer-thin finances, they are in buyout talks that will allow West Ham to run a football-only ground. With the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham revamped, there is an option to relocate and take the money, which could be as little as £12million. But World Athletics president Coe thinks it will be harder to get World Championships outside of London. He said: ‘We have to maintain a worldclass presence for track-and-field in London. It would be bizarre not to.

‘I want London to remain a stopping point for international athletics.’
