Which judge DID ground Africa plane?
ONLY two European judges had the power to thwart Boris Johnson’s Rwanda deportation scheme at the 11th hour.
Carlo Ranzoni, who represents Liechtenstein, and Hungarian Peter Paczolay, were the only pair with the authority to grant a last-ditch injunction. The third ‘duty judge’ is British barrister Tim Eicke, 55, who would have been forced to recuse himself on the grounds of his nationality.
Mr Ranzoni, 56, was elected to the European Court of Human Rights court in 2015. The Swiss jurist has a masters in law from his native St Gallen and was reportedly a member of the Christian Peoples’ Party – which seeks to apply Christian principles to public policy.
Péter Paczolay, 66, has been a judge at the ECHR since 2017. He was vice president of the advisory Venice Commission of the Council of Europe for two years.
