Come on, England!
I’VE long been disillusioned with the England football team, so the 4-0 thrashing by Hungary just exacerbated my exasperation.
Winning trophies is great, but the quality of the performance is paramount.
Watching England is boring — square and backwards passing, slow tempo, no exciting dribbling or displays of outstanding technical ability.
After this week’s abysmal display, I played my DVD of the 1966 World Cup final in which England beat West Germany 4-2.
What a contrast! Fast, open play, non-stop emphasis on getting through the opponent’s defence and great goals.
I didn’t witness one backwards pass. Even defensive midfielder Nobby Stiles made surging runs forward.
Under Gareth Southgate, England have reached a World Cup semi-final and the final of Euros, but that’s not enough for me. Win, lose or draw, I want to watch exciting, attacking football. Is that possible under Southgate?
