Another poll, Nicola? It’s a waste of money
HERE we go again! First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is calling for another referendum on Scottish independence. Its only uplifting aspect would be the end of SNP politicians in Westminster. No more loudmouth Ian Blackford and his stuck record: ‘Resign, Prime Minister!’ Has Nicola considered that independence could spell the end of the SNP as Brexit did for Ukip?
H. SINCLAIR, Turriff, Aberdeenshire. CAN I give the UK Government a piece of advice: ignore the call for another independence referendum and concentrate on the critical task of tackling the cost-of-living crisis. This is what the SNP should be focused on in Scotland, not another divisive poll, which will result only in more wasted money. Nicola Sturgeon is taking her eye off the ball — again!
E. NICHOLLS, Dunfermline. IF NICOLA STURGEON wants independence, she must ask that the referendum polls English voters, too.
Name and address supplied. DOESN’T Nicola Sturgeon understand many voted SNP as an alternative to the out-of-favour Conservative and Labour parties in Scotland? It doesn’t mean they all want independence. I’m sure they’re canny enough to know a country with a population smaller than London simply can’t be economically viable. If Ms Sturgeon disputes this, perhaps she could demonstrate it by Scotland operating for a year without financial support from Westminster.
JOHN VIZE, Hellidon, Northants. BREAK away from the rest of the UK, but be part of the EU? That’s not actually independence.
J. MARTIN, Barnet, Herts. NICOLA STURGEON is calling for another vote for independence, but she still hasn’t spelled out what sort of border there would be between England and Scotland and what tariffs could apply after independence. Unlike Northern Ireland, there is no sea in which to draw an artificial border. England will insist on a similar level of tariffs applied by the EU to the UK. This will require the sort of hard border and bureaucracy applied by the EU to the UK following Brexit. While I support a united UK, I believe the majority in England will not oppose independence for Scotland. Due to the unfair Barnett formula, Scotland receives £1,600 per head more than the North-West of England. That injustice will be eliminated after independence.
JAMES WIGNALL, Accrington, Lancs. STOP the Barnett to give Scotland a better understanding of the implications of leaving the UK.
