THE ELECTRICAL LIFE OF LOUIS WAIN, 11.50AM, 8PM, SKY PREMIERE
BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH has a proven flair for playing brilliant outsiders, and was a great choice to star in this charming, whimsical biopic about the eccentric English illustrator Louis Wain, which is now available on Sky’s subscription services. Wain was a fascinating figure who became famous for his colourful pictures of cats, but whose life was blighted by tragedy. The always excellent Claire Foy is Wain’s wife, Emily (pictured with Cumberbatch), and Toby
Jones is his employer and patron. It’s a film of two halves, the first focusing on Wain’s romance with Emily, the second depicting his mental health struggles. Andrea Riseborough plays one of the five sisters Wain was left to support following his father’s death — and look out for the musician and singer Nick Cave, who counts himself as a ‘disciple’ of Wain’s work, and has a cameo as the writer H.G. Wells, a real-life supporter of the artist.
