THE DOCUMENTARY: QUEEN OF THE BASS, 9.06AM, 8.06PM, WORLD SERVICE

-

CAROL KAYE has played bass guitar on more than 10,000 records, so it’s pretty likely that you will have heard the work of this prolific, highly rated musician. Carol (pictured in 1966) was already working as a session musician when, at one recording, the bass player failed to turn up, so she stepped in. Now, at the age of 87, she joins Suzi Quatro, from her home in California, to talk about working with the likes of Sam Cooke, Nancy Sinatra, Frank Zappa, Sonny & Cher, Simon and Garfunkel and the sublimely talented Quincy Jones.

VLATKO VEDRAL has been busy building ’an engine that works harder than the laws of physics allow’. It uses lasers and ions instead of pistons and oil, and, if the professor gets it up and running, we’ll have to rethink all we thought we knew about the universe. Vlatko talks to Jim Al-Khalili on THE LIFE SCIENTIFIC (RADIO 4, 9AM, 9.30PM), couching his theories in terms that, with a following wind, are simple enough for we Earthlings to understand.
