LENNY HENRY’S CARIBBEAN BRITAIN, 9PM, BBC2

-

‘INTEGRATE, otherwise you won’t fit in.’ British-born Lenny Henry recalls early advice from his Jamaican mum about how to succeed in the UK. At the time, Lenny was left confused by exactly what that integration should entail — would fitting in with the local people in Dudley mean that he and his siblings would be losing their strong Caribbean identity? Now, older and wiser, Sir Lenworth returns to that question, exploring to what extent cultural integration is a twoway street. Set to a ska soundtrack, this very personal two-parter celebrates the impact Caribbean immigrants have had on the arts in Britain. With help from famous friends such as Caribbean Queen crooner Billy Ocean, presenter Floella Benjamin (pictured with Lenny), comedian Judi Love, chef and musician Levi Roots and poet Benjamin Zephaniah, Lenny explores British-Caribbean identity, asking how it became a source of national pride. In the concluding episode, which follows next Wednesday, he looks to the future, and discovers how third and fourth generations are reconnecting with their own Caribbean roots.
