TOP SPIN AT THE TEST

MITCHELL MAKES HISTORY...

- LAWRENCE BOOTH AT HEADINGLEY

DARYL MITCHELL yesterday became the first New Zealander to score three Test centuries in a series against England. Mitchell also became the first New Zealander to score three Test centuries in a series away from home. Furthermore, he is now just the sixth man to score a century in three consecutive Tests in a series away v England — and the first to do so since India’s Rahul Dravid in 2002.

The others to do it are Charles Macartney for Australia in 1926, Don Bradman for Australia in 1930 and 1938, David Boon for Australia in 1993, and Brian Lara for West Indies in 1995.

JACK LEACH is the first England spinner to take five wickets in a Test innings at Headingley since Graeme Swann, also against New Zealand, in 2013. Before that, you have to go back to John Emburey (left) in 1985 against Australia.

It was Leach’s first five-wicket haul at home and his third overall — after taking one in Sri Lanka in 2018 and 2021.
