Boris and Carrie WON’T have wedding party at Chequers

- By Martin Beckford

WEDDING party for Boris and Carrie Johnson will no longer be held at the Prime Minister’s country residence.

The couple had invited family and friends to celebrate their marriage at Chequers having only had a low-key marriage ceremony at Westminster Cathedral last year.

It had been claimed that they would host a ‘champagne-soaked soiree’ at the Buckinghamshire

manor house on July 30, and had sent out save-the-date cards.

But they faced criticism for going ahead with the party despite Mr Johnson being forced to quit this week, and promising to step down when a new PM is appointed.

They now plan to hold the event elsewhere to avoid further controversy. Sources said ‘nothing had been firmed up’ about the Chequers party and that an alternative venue would be used.

But a Cabinet minister said that Mr Johnson should have been allowed to celebrate at the grace-and-favour mansion even if he had left office by the date of the party.

New Education Secretary James Cleverly told the BBC: ‘I think that if that is done by that point in time, I suspect that it would be a rather generous action of the new Prime Minister to allow that to go ahead.

‘Private functions like that do not impose a burden on the public purse. I think it’s churlish to be negative about two people who want to celebrate their marriage and their love for each other.’
