We must trust in judicial process

-

Yves Bissouma was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault last october. He was later cleared. Between the arrest and the decision not to prosecute, Brighton continued to play him. as a result of his continued good performances, he secured a £30million transfer to Tottenham this summer.

Yet what if Brighton had dropped him for the remainder of the season? No career promotion for a man who had done nothing wrong, no £30m dividend for his employers who were blameless, plus the stigma of guilt by association. a similar case against Robin van Persie in Rotterdam was also dismissed; it didn’t stop opposition fans singing about it for the rest of his career. so as appalling as it may seem on first look, it is understandable that the club of the Premier League player accused of rape have allowed him to continue playing while the allegations remain that. Benjamin mendy of manchester City has been charged. That is different. mason Greenwood’s name was in the public domain, and attached to some very lurid footage made public by a young woman. Faced with this, manchester united had a decision to make, and suspended him pending the outcome of a police investigation. in this case, the player is unnamed, the club unknown and we do not know if there will even be a charge. The player could be another mendy, or another Bissouma. He could be an offender, he could be exonerated. anyone who believes in the process of justice should let events run their course.
