7m LPs... another record bites the dust
THEY still rock you – Queen have made UK chart history with an album released in 1981.
The band’s Greatest Hits has become the first to sell 7million copies, through a combination of physical sales, downloads and streams. The album, which features hits including Bohemian Rhapsody, Killer Queen, We Will Rock You and Don’t Stop Me Now, is almost 1million sales ahead of its nearest rival, Abba’s 1992 compilation Gold.
Drummer Roger Taylor said the group were ‘humbled and honoured’ by the milestone, while guitarist Brian May was excited to spread the ‘joyous news’.
It is estimated that Queen’s Greatest Hits is owned by more than one in four UK households.
Last month it became only the third album to reach 1,000 weeks on the Official Albums Chart, after Bob Marley’s Legend and Abba’s Gold.
