Many people now wish they had voted in 2016, just in case too many alehouse patriots had been mobilised to vote Leave. By a hair’s breadth, they had.

A lot of voters stampeded to become Irish.

Now all the large parties in England, and Edinburgh MSPs, are intimidate­d by the memory of Boris Johnson’s general election success in 2019. But the intoxicati­on of that success has vanished and there is no need to be afraid.

Hold the European referendum again.
