EU turmoil over Putin’s gas threat
THE EU faces a revolt from within over plans for wartime-style energy rationing to beat Russia’s gas ‘blackmail’.
Vladimir Putin is threatening to cut supplies to Europe by up to 80 per cent. Now European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen wants an emergency law forcing the bloc to slash gas consumption by 15 per cent by next April.
‘Why should we pay for Germany’s mistakes?’ asked one EU diplomat from a country that imports no gas from Moscow. Germany still gets 55 per cent of its natural gas from Russia.
