THE exotic and fantastical tales of the One Thousand and One Nights were a great source of inspiration for composers in the 19th century. Maurice Ravel’s earliest surviving orchestral piece is an overture for a planned opera about the Tales’ beautiful heroine and narrator, Sheherazade. It was influenced by

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s symphonic suite of the same name. The BBC National Orchestra of Wales performs both enchanting works at the Royal Albert Hall tonight, and is also joined by the harpist Catrin Finch for the world premiere of a piece by Sally Beamish that depicts a year in the life of a beehive.
