BBC stokes ‘Maggie blouse’ row
THE Foreign Secretary was forced to deny dressing like Margaret Thatcher today amid claims that comparisons between the two are sexist.
Liz Truss (pictured) has long been likened to the Iron Lady after engaging in similar eye- catching photo opportunities.
Miss Truss has donned military gear and perched on a tank for pictures during a visit to Estonia, echoing a famous image of the former prime minister in a tank in West Germany in 1986. More recently, her outfit at the first televised leadership debate bore uncanny similarities to an outfit worn by Mrs Thatcher in 1979. But yesterday, Miss Truss tried to scotch any notion of a conscious attempt to model herself on the decade-defining PM.
BBC Radio 4’s Today programme presenter Nick Robinson told her: ‘You dress and model yourself on Margaret Thatcher.’ But Miss Truss hit back: ‘I don’t accept that: I am my own person. I’m from a very different background.’ In an interview with GB News, she called any suggestion of a resemblance between them ‘frustrating’.
