Mind the gaps

AS THE heat affects rail services, who remembers the bad old days when train travellers were lulled into drowsiness by that rhythmic ‘clickity clack’? What caused it? Oh yes, expansion gaps between the rails. I wonder what bright spark thought we no longer needed those gaps.
