WHEN Rishi Sunak called on his rivals to be honest about taxes, perhaps he should have considered the view of former Chancellor Winston Churchill: ‘For a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle.’

TOBIAS ELLWOOD, the Tory MP stripped of the whip, showed he is a man of principle by abstaining from the vote of no confidence in a Government still led by Boris. Sunak and the other 56 ministers who resigned should have done likewise.
