A female primary school teacher needs clothes that allow her to take an outdoor PE lesson; prepare for and supervise craft sessions involving paint, glue or clay; help serve dinners at lunchtime; sit on the floor during circle time and join in games while on playground duty.

She’ll be lucky to find time to use the toilet facilities all day, never mind checking she looks flawless in a mirror.

In 20 years of primary teaching, I never wore a designer dress and killer heels.
