UWE SEELER, who captained West Germany against england in the 1966 World Cup final, died yesterday at the age of 85. the striker spent his entire career at his hometown club hamburg from 1954 to 1972, becoming their record scorer after finding the net 490 times in 580 appearance­s. he won the German title in 1960, the year he finished third in the Ballon d’Or behind Luis Suarez and Ferenc Puskas.

It was on the internatio­nal stage where he became renowned, scoring 43 times in 72 games for West Germany and wearing the armband for the 1966 final.
