THE news that BMW hopes to charge car buyers monthly

for extras came as no surprise to me.

In the early 1980s, I sold BMWs. To achieve as much profit as possible from our dealership’s strict allocation of 600 vehicles a year, we sold all basic spec cars with extras such as a sunroof, stereo and alloy wheels, which added about £2,000 to the price of a 316 model.
