What’s the real cause of gridlock at Dover?
THE problem in Dover is down to the French being their usual intransigent selves. Even before we left the EU, every British passenger had to show their passport on arrival in a European country to some sullen, bored official sitting in a kiosk. This was because we are not part of the Schengen Agreement that abolishes checks at common borders.
Post Brexit, it takes no longer to stamp passports, but the French have to make their point.
B. JORDAN, Loughborough, Leics. GRIDLOCK at Dover — why are we surprised? This is what ‘getting Brexit done’ looks like. It was the Government who insisted on ending freedom of movement, the return of border controls and mandatory checks on passports.
The chaos that would result was long predicted. Remember all those warnings dismissed as Project Fear? Brexit is all about red tape, barriers, delays and expense. The quicker it is reversed, the better for us all.
KEVIN SULLIVAN, Swansea. CONGRATULATIONS to the French authorities on their thorough checks to ensure no illegal migrants are entering their country from Britain.
Why not send that team to stop such migrants coming our way?
STEVE DAULBY, Wrexham. THE French authorities were given ample warnings about the level of traffic expected to travel through
Dover at the start of our school holidays. Not having enough border guards seems like an attempt to sabotage the British getaway. But President Macron’s smirking will fade when French holiday destinations are short of customers.
ROBERT FRAZER, Salford, Lancs. DELAYS at Dover are being blamed on additional passport control activity as a result of Brexit. What rubbish! Britain and Ireland never joined the Schengen area. The port delays are mainly caused by the French authorities not manning checking points properly.
The French have form for poor organisation and they will never forgive us for leaving the EU.
