Telegraph boss faces jail over divorce cash

-

SIR Frederick Barclay has been found in contempt of court after failing to stump up his exwife Hiroko’s legal fees and maintenance allowance.

Lady Barclay, 79, failed to prove the businessman had deliberately failed to pay the first half of their £100million divorce settlement, but his non-payment of smaller sums totalling just £245,000 means that he still could face jail.

She told High Court Judge Sir Jonathan Cohen that Sir Frederick, 87 – who bought the Daily Telegraph with his late twin David in 2004 – could pay a first instalment of £50million but was stringing things out until ‘one or other of us dies’.

Solicitor Marcus Dearle, for Sir Frederick, told the judge that all steps to raise the money owed had failed. Sentencing takes place next month.
