Coren checks out of BBC job after outburst on Twitter
GILES Coren has left his job at the BBC following a toxic row on social media.
The 53-year-old journalist had helped present four series of Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond
the Lobby. But sources at the corporation said his position became untenable after he posted two tweets apparently celebrating the death of the journalist Dawn Foster.
She had accused Coren of nepotism because his father was the noted columnist Alan Coren.
Both tweets were deleted but led to complaints to the BBC, the press regulator IPSO and also The Times newspaper, where Coren writes a food column.
A BBC source said: ‘His position became untenable. We are now looking for a replacement for Giles. The person has to be as unlike Giles Coren as possible.’
Coren said that he was moving on because of a diary clash and thanked the BBC for the ‘beautiful’ way it had handled the transition.
The BBC said in a statement: ‘We’re sorry to see Giles go and would like to thank him for his contribution over four successful series.’
Coren was approached for comment last night.
